Old ruins and temples Back to Home PageLinks to other Rajastan Photos: Udaipur Thar Desert MansionsWe found some of the oldest temples and ruins of various deities both within the walls of the old cities and in the coutryside. Some are to Shiva, Vishnu, or Bramha - others to Ganesh, Krishna. One interesting feature was the practice of depicting 'all' aspects of human life in the carvings as a way of teaching the people. We also saw some of the most revered Jain temples and the great Kumbhalgarh Fort whose walls stretch continuously for over 30 kilometers. The bottom shots are the cremation grounds for the Jaisalmer rulers. Sati, the practice of wives throwing themselves on the funeral pyres of their burning husbands, was common here.1/4/01 |
