Kashmir: Lake photos
Srinigar city has three lakes at it's north and west end. A lifestyle of its own has evolved around and on them. In the course of our stay we caught a small glimpse of this on Shikara rides (small hand paddled tour boats). The houseboats began in the 1800's when the British could not own land. It gradually explanded from the river to the lakes and became transformed into a booming lodging business. Since the early 90's however, the entire tourist industry has fallen on hard times due to the political instability. One morning we all jumped into a boat at 5:30 and witnessed the morning floating vegetable market. The traders then depart and attempt to sell the remainder of their goods to the local markets. Most all of the other photos were taken from the houseboat or Shikara rides. |
